Toronto Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Hubert Hurkacz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Hubert Hurkacz (7) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday August 13th, 2021.

Top seeded Daniil Medvedev is one of the top contenders for the title here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is looking to be in fine form at the moment. The Russian was looking to bounce back after a disappointing Olympics, and so far has done it in a big way. He is now three wins away from the title, and next up in his path is seventh seeded Hubert of Poland. Can Medvedev get the win as expected? Or does the Pole have a trick up his sleeve and can he cause the massive upset here at the Rogers Cup?

Daniil Medvedev is currently ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings and is the top seed here at the 2021 Toronto Open. Due to the withdrawals of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, the Russian is the main contender for the title here at the Rogers Cup, and has backed up that claim so far. After a tough opening round win over Alexander Bublik in three sets, he cruised past Aussie James Duckworth 6-2, 6-4 without many issues. While it was a dominant performance, he had a lapse in concentration late in the second set, allowing the Aussie to win three consecutive games when down 5-1. He knows that cannot happen against someone of the caliber of Hubert Hurkacz, and will have to be more focused in this encounter.

Hubert Hurkacz is the seventh seed here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is currently ranked #13 on the ATP Tour. The Pole has had a very good yet inconsistent season so far, with a few early round exits added to his Miami Open title and run to the Wimbledon Semi-Finals. His huge serve and groundstrokes are major weapons on this surface, and were on full display in his epic three set win over Nikolosz Basilashvili. He committed way too many errors in that match, but it was to be expected as it was his first match in the competition. The hope is that he has gotten used to the conditions and is ready to go here against Daniil Medvedev, in what is expected to be a very tough match for him. If he can serve well and keep his errors low then he has the potential to keep this match very interesting at the 2021 Toronto Open.

This is the second time that the two players are meeting on the ATP Tour, with Hubert Hurkacz leading the head to head 1-0. They played a few weeks ago at Wimbledon, with the Pole pulling off a stunning upset in the Fourth Round en route to his first ever Grand Slam Semi-Final. While he is a bit rusty, he will be very confident after that victory and will be ready and rearing to go here. He is one of the few players on the tour that is capable of hitting through the Russian’s defenses, and I am expecting a huge battle here. However, I believe that Daniil Medvedev is simply too good at the moment, and should be able to neutralize that power and come away with a hard-fought win. Hurkacz has improved greatly this season and has the talent to come close, but will ultimately fall short here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
