TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as DaniilMedvedev takes on Laslo Djere in the second round on Thursday, May 26th, 2022.

Daniil Medvedev handled a pressure-packed opening match with aplomb, but faces a major test in his second round when he takes on the dangerous Laslo Djere at the French Open. Will the second seed falter or will he keep his hopes of reclaiming the No. 1 ranking alive?
Daniil Medvedev did not even expect to be at the French Open this year, but if ever there was an athlete who continuously goes to break new barriers, he is an exception. The Russian made his return to action much earlier than anticipated following hernia surgery. Although he suffered a surprise loss in Geneva, he has been quick to tick it off as a blip. Medvedev opened up his Roland Garros campaign with a routine win over FacundoBagnis. Remarkably this was just his first win on the clay this season and is clearly taking it one match at a time. The Russian is renowned for his dislike of clay courts, but he did reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last season. So do not be surprised if he makes another dash into the second week.

Laslo Djere, meanwhile, has come into this year’s French Open as an unseeded floater. The Serbian World No. 56 was a step ahead of his opponent Ricardas Berankis, closing out a 6-4 6-46-4 win in just over two hours. With this victory, Djere will be aiming to repeat last year’s exploits of reaching the third round. Will he record the upset against Daniil Medvedev?
Laslo Djere, surprisingly, has a 1-0 lead over Daniil Medvedevin their head-to-head. However, it is pertinent to note, that meeting took place almost five years ago, just before Medvedevrose to prominence. Djere has one thing going for him on Thursday at the French Open. He has played himself into form and he probably has a lot more juice in his legs having garnered sufficient match play in the past few months. Medvedev, by contrast, has missed a bulk of this European clay schedule and could get tetchy if things don’t go right. But I think the win over Bagnis should calm his nerves and let him go for the kill.
