TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Marketa Vondrousova takes on Paula Badosa in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.
Will Paula Badosa continue to improve her game as she aims to make a bigger name for herself in the tennis world? Will Marketa Vondrousova back up that amazing upset victory against Naomi Osaka which shocked us all? Both players are fighters and have a solid chance of winning this match, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Paula Badosa cruised through her third round match against Nadia Podoroska, beating the Argetine in straight sets 6-2/6-3. Paula Badosa knows that she has been in great form all week in Tokyo but she will also know that the further she goes into the tournament, the tougher opponents she will meet. Paula is proving herself to be a solid competitor on all surfaces this year, and the momentum she gains here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be used to help her go far in many tournaments during the US hard court season next month. Can Badosa beat the in form Marketa Vondrousova to continue breaking through the barriers?
Marketa Vondrousova got a statement win under her belt in the third round, shocking all of us and breaking the heart of the Japanese tennis fansm by beating the highest seed remaining and local hero, Naomi Osaka, in straight sets 6-1/6-4. Naomi had been in dominant form all week and the fact that Marketa was able to destroy her so badly was just shocking. Marketa was just moving amazingly around the court and she took advantage of every mistake by Naomi. However, she cannot take that win as a free ticket to get herself further here in Tokyo, especially as she now meets Paula Badosa.
Marketa Vondrousova and Paula Badosa have met 1 time before, with Paula Badosa leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier this year at the French Open where Badosa won in 3 sets. Their match was very tight and I expect the same here. Although Marketa just got a huge win under her belt by defeating Naomi Osaka, the win was as much of Naomi just not being at good as she could have been as it was Marketa dominating. Paula has been dominant all week and I see her not being afraid of anyone and anything as she swings freely. This will give her an edge and get herself in the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
