French Open 2022: Frances Tiafoe vs. David Goffin Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Frances Tiafoe takes on David Goffin in the second round on Thursday, May 26th, 2022.

A resurgent David Goffin is not the player Frances Tiafoe would have relished facing at the French Open. Will the Belgian keep up his recent hot streak on the European clay by reaching the third round? Or will the American halt his momentum?

Frances Tiafoe and David Goffin have both enjoyed productive seasons on the clay. Tiafoe, for his part, reached the final of Estoril at the start of May, digging out a handful of three-setters to get there. But by the final, he had little left in the tank to compete and was well beaten by Sebastian Baez. While early defeats in Madrid and Rome were expected given the nature of his laborious week in Portugal, Tiafoe took time to recharge his batteries for this year’s French Open. The enigmatic Tiafoe had a lot to prove at the clay slam. Remarkably, he had faltered at the first hurdle in each of his six main draw appearances at Roland Garros, but changed that unwanted record with highly-satisfying first-round win over Benjamin Bonzi.

David Goffin, meanwhile, came to this year’s Roland Garrosunseeded for the first time in what must have felt like eternity. Goffin, who had been a mainstay in the world’s Top 20, had endured a difficult 2021 season. But the Belgian is making a strong case for Comeback Player of the Season in 2022, after capturing his sixth career title on the clay of Marrakech last month. He has also re-entered the world’s Top 50 in recent weeks after making the Round of 16 in Madrid as a qualifier. The former World No. 7 began his French Open campaign in style, beating the fast-rising Czech Jiri Lehecka in four sets.

David Goffin leads the head-to-head over Frances Tiafoe 3-1. But the two players have not played each other since the 2019, so it might be slightly redundant to dwell too much into that head-to-head. Nonetheless, Goffin should be a slight favorite in Thursday’s match at the French Open. He has rediscovered that winning touch and his fitness levels have improved immensely in the past couple of months. While Tiafoe is capable of producing the spectacular, Goffin’s usually reliable baseline game is worth backing.
