TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Barbora Krejcikova takes on Belinda Bencic in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.
Will Belinda Bencic be able to get a huge win under her belt both in terms of stature and for her confidence? Will Barbora Krejcikova continue to show us how good she is in Singles now that she has been at the highest level throughout 2021? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Belinda Bencic cruised through her second round match against the local Japanese Misaki Doi, beating her in straight sets 6-2/6-4. It is good seeing Belinda playing at a high level here in Tokyo, and she knows that the more good wins she gets under her belt, the more confident and successful she will be during the US hard court swing next month. Belinda will now have to raise her level even more as she meets the very in form Barbora Krejcikova who has been on top of her game over the last 2 months.
Barbora Krejcikova also cruised through her second round match, beating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets 6-2/6-4 to get herself in the Round of 16. Barbora Krejcikova is improving with every tournament she plays in now that she knows she can win big titles in the singles after she won the French Open in June of this year. Barbora is so hard to beat because she is able to hit incredible shots from anywhere and she is a great mover on the court. However, she now meets Belinda Bencic who can also beat anyone on her day, so she will have to be ready for a battle.
Barbora Krejcikova and Belinda Bencic have never met before, with this being their first ever career meeting. They are so close in terms of ranking, with Barbora being 11th and Belinda being 12th in the world. If this was a couple years ago, I would have chosen Belinda Bencic no questions asked. However, with the form that Barbora Krejcikova has shown this year, I expect she will come through this tight match. Belinda Bencic will keep things tight, but Barbora has the momentum and the experience to get herself into the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
