TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Aryna Sabalenka (2) faces Katie Boulter in the Round of 64 on Wednesday, June 30th 2021.
Will Katie Boulter be able to cause a stunning upset? Will Aryna Sabalenka make another show of strength and carry her momentum to the Round of 32? This match will be interesting to be able to see if Aryna Sabalenka can maintain her level and go all the way this year at the Championships.
Home favorite Katie Boulter came through today in a tough contest after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. If she wants to have a shot at taking out Sabalenka, she will need to get her service numbers much higher, they were rather flat today and she can’t get away with those numbers against a player like Aryna. However, today she was able to mentally regroup herself and make a great show of mental strength after losing such a close set and rallying back to take the next two sets 6-3 6-4. If Boulter is able to serve very well and make sure to not pass up on any opportunities, she may be able to push her opponent on Wednesday, although it’s a very tough ask of her either way.
Aryna Sabalenka came through today with a straightforward win over Monica Niculescu. While she remains the heavy favorite going into the second round, Aryna will still need to at least maintain a solid level, despite the scoreline today, she had a little bit of trouble with her first serve, only winning about 65% of 1st serve points whilst serving at 66%. She handled her second serve beautifully though with a 75% win rate off that wing. If she is able to maintain numbers like that, I don’t see her having many issues in this matchup against Katie. I expect her to make a strong showing and make a deep run at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Aryna Sabalenka and Katie Boulter have met once before, with Aryna Sabalenka leading the head to head 1-0. Their only meeting came just two years ago at the 2019 edition of the Australian Open, with Sabalenka taking care of Boulter 6-3 6-4. There should be no big surprises in either of their games for Wednesday’s match, and the outcome will mostly depend on the level of Aryna, seeing whether she can serve well and keep a solid level throughout the match. If she is able to do that I have little concern for her not being able to move on, as for Katie, she will definitely need to play the best tennis of her life, what she displayed today will not be enough to stand a chance against the world number four.
