TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Ons Jabeur takes on Alize Cornet in the Round of 128 on Monday, August 30th, 2021.
Will Ons Jabeur go through? Will Akize Cornet pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Jabeur can make another great slam run. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open?
Ons Jabeur has had a great summer, backing up her quarterfinals result at Wimbledon with a quarterfinal and fourth round at Toronto and Cincinnati. She should be feeling quite confident going into the US Open, especially in her first round match where she is definitely the favorite. Using her powerful groundstrokes, she will definitely try to play pretty aggressively to overpower Alize Cornet and get the straightforward win at the 2021 US Open. While Cornet is playing rather well and could definitely present a challenge, Jabeur will have had more time to recover since her last match in addition to current form and recent results to back it up.
Alize Cornet has been playing pretty well, currently being in the finals of the Chicago Open. Although, she did play more minor tournaments compared to Ons Jabeur, who performed rather well in the two masters 1000 events, because of this she will not have gotten as good of a practice leading up to the US Open in addition to just playing worse overall this year. It will be a very hard match for sure where she will have to play very aggressively, playing defensively or trying to get into longer rallies won’t work for her against Jabeur, she’ll need to try to run her around the court a lot and pull the trigger often, let’s see if she can push Jabeur at all in her quest to reaching the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open.
Ons Jabeur and Alize Cornet have met twice before, with Ons Jabeur leading the head to head 2-0. Jabeur won in two close meetings, both in recent years with one of them taking place this year. This was before Jabeur really stepped up her game and started playing well, but still, it shows that Cornet can most certainly hold her own and she will know what to expect. She absolutely has the chance to throw off Jabeur and take control of certain aspects of the match, such as the serve which I expect to be stronger than Jabeurs, however, she will most likely be outplayed in terms of the groundstrokes and returns, where Jabeur has been thriving as of late, I expect her to get a nice and solid win to start off her 2021 US Open campaign.
