TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Daniel Altmaier in the first round on Monday, January 17th, 2022.
Will Daniel Altmaier come out here and shock us all as he aims to beat his much higher ranked fellow German? Will Alexander Zverev get his first grand slam campaign off the year to a strong start and back up his goals of what he wants to achieve in 2022? Who will make their way to the round of 64 in this battle of the Germans at the 2022 Australian Open?
Daniel Altmaier has gone 2-2 in his matches this year, winning his 2 qualifying matches to get into the Sydney Open, and then losing both his first round matches in Adelaide and Sydney. Daniel Altmaier is a good player on his day, having a very good one-handed backhand. He will remember the time when he beat Matteo Berrettini at the 2020 French Open and shocked us all. However, since then, he has not really gotten anything going in his career that is noteworthy. I would be extremely shocked if he is able to come out here at the 2022 Australian Open and get anything going against Alexander Zverev.
Alexander Zverev played some very good matches to start his 2022 season, going 2-1 at the ATP Cup. Although he was not able to carry Team Germany to the knockout stages, he still got some competitive minutes under his belt against solid players. This was good preparation for the 2022 Australian Open and he will come out here ready to begin his campaign. Alexander told journalists a few weeks ago that he wants to win a grand slam and to become the World No.1. Will he begin strongly against Daniel Altmaier and perhaps get one step closer to his first goal?
Alexander Zverev and Daniel Altmaier have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Daniel comes into this match with nothing to lose, I see him as a low level challenger tour player who is not really going to get far in the ATP Tour with his current level of tennis. Alexander is a man on a mission, and he is not going to let someone ranked 91 in the world get anything going against him as this can give more confidence to future opponents when it matters more here at the 2022 Australian Open.
