TennisSection previews the 2022 Montpellier Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Mikael Ymer in the semifinal on Saturday, February 5th, 2022.
Alexnader Zverev extended his winning streak at the Montpellier Open with victory over Adrian Mannarino on Friday. The German will have another stern test of his title credentials on Saturday when he faces Sweden’s rising star Mikael Ymer.
Alexander Zverev played one of his best matches of the year to beat Adrian Mannarino 6-1 6-0. In a match that lasted only 51 minutes, Zverev showed an incredible level of focus right from the off. And the German bludgeoned his way into another semifinal at the Montpellier Open, serving eight aces and breaking the Mannarino serve six times. Zverev also maintained his 100% winning record over the Frenchman in their head-to-head which stands at an astounding 7-0. He will now face one of the brightest young prospects to come from Sweden for some time in Mikael Ymer.
Mikael Ymer also needed to scale past a Frenchman in his quarterfinal at the Montpellier Open. He toppled three-time champion Richard Gasquet in three sets to reach his first semifinal of the season. The Swede overcame the disappointment of spurning a match point towards the end of the second set on Gasquet’s serve. But he upped the ante in the third, and Gasquet did not have enough energy in the tank for one more lap against the 23-year-old legs of Ymer.
Alexander Zverev leads Mikael Ymer 2-0 in their head-to-head. None of their meetings came after the 2019 Roland Garros where the German easily dispatched Ymer in straight sets at the clay Slam. While their first meeting came almost seven years ago at Ymer’s home tournament in Stockholm – in match that featured two tiebreakers. Both players have played well to make it to this stage of the Montpellier Open. Zverev is 9-1 at this event and knows the tournament like the palm of his hand. He was almost unplayable in his match against Mannarino. If he consistently hits his spots on serve, with fewer double faults, there is little resistance coming his way.
