TennisSection previews the 2022 Barcelona Open as Cameron Norrie takes on Egor Gerasimov in the second round on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022.
After his unsuccessful title defense in Indian Wells, Cameron Norrie will be looking to get his clay-court campaign up and running. Norrie starts his Barcelona Open adventure against big-serving Belarusian Egor Gerasimov. Can the Brit avoid the upset?
Cameron Norrie was sent packing in his first outing on the European clay this past week at the Monte Carlo Masters. Norrie fell to Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas in three sets and continues a bittersweet season which has seen him reach the top 10 of the ATP rankings for the first time, but also lose his bid to defend his Indian Wells title which he won so dramatically last season. Norrie was beaten in the quarterfinals stage on his return to the desert, but it has still been a solid season for the 26-year-old lefty who has notched 15 wins on the ATP tour. Can Norrie get the ball rolling at the Barcelona Open?
Egor Gerasimov will fancy his chances of causing an upset. The man from Belarus has snapped his six-match losing streak at this week’s Barcelona Open. Gerasimov scaled the qualifying rounds successfully beating Raul Brancaccio and Andrea Pellegrino without dropping a set. Then in the main draw, he took it up a notch scoring an upset win over World No. 68 Adrian Mannarino. Gerasimov came from a set down to defeat the French southpaw 2-6 6-3 6-4 for his first main draw win at tour-level since January.
Cameron Norrie and Egor Gerasimov have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at the Barcelona Open will be their first official main draw meeting. The pair have contested one match before, in the qualifying rounds of the Paris Masters in 2019, with Norrie winning in a third-set tiebreaker. Norrie will have to be very patient in this match given that Gerasimov has already acclimatized with the court conditions and seems to be swinging freely this week. But assuming the Briton does not overcomplicate matters, he has a potent topspin forehand which could wreak havoc in Gerasimov’s game plan.
