TennisSection previews the 2023 Australian Open as Casper Ruud takes on Jenson Brooksby in the Round of 64 on Thursday, January 19, 2023.
Will Casper Ruud get the win? Will Jenson Brooksby pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have the 2nd seed taking on a very challenging 2nd round. Who will triumph and move through to the Round of 32 at the 2023 Australian Open?
Casper Ruud didn’t play his best in his opener, needing 4 tough sets to get through, and it’s not going to get much easier against Jenson Brooksby. Brooksby is playing some decent tennis, and Ruud is susceptible to a potential upset, although we typically rely on his ability to win these early matches more than most players on tour, one of his best qualities. Let’s see if Ruud can stay strong here at the 2023 Australian Open.
Jenson Brooksby has a punchers chance in my opinion, however, the issue for him here is that just like him, Ruud likes to grind, but he also has more versatility to his game in particular of the serve and forehand, Ruud is far, far better at those things. Being able to grind and attack will be deadly against someone like Brooksby, so even if I think Jenson can be really annoying for Ruud here, I expect the Norwegian to make work of things in the end at the 2023 Australian Open.
Casper Ruud and Jenson Brooksby have met once before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in Rome last year and to be completely honest that match holds no bearing for me when considering this match as it was on clay and we’re looking at a top 5 clay courter vs someone who likely isn’t even in the top 100 players on clay right now. Ruud is just too consistent for me to go against him here as he looks to move on to the 3rd round here at the 2023 Australian Open.
