TennisSection previews the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters first-round match featuring Benjamin Bonzi vs Bernabe Zapata Miralles on Monday, April 10, 2023.
Bonzi vs Zapata Miralles Match Preview and Prediction
France’s Benjamin Bonzi will play clay-court specialist Bernabe Zapata Miralles in a matchup between two unseeded players at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. Who will prevail?
Benjamin Bonzi is 11-8 for the season after he fell to a shock second-round defeat to Pavel Kotov in Marrakech this past week. The performance was also concerning, with Bonzi going down 6-0, 7-6. It’s certainly not the kind of headstart he wished for coming to a big tournament like the Monte-Carlo Masters where he will have his hands full against an in-form clay courter like Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
Bernabe Zapata Miralles played in his fourth clay-court tournament of the season at the Estoril Open where he made the last eight, losing to eventual finalist Miomir Kecmanovic. Outside Cordoba, he made the semifinals in two tournaments during the Golden Swing, losing both times to eventual champions of those events (Buenos Aires and Rio). Let’s see if he can continue in a similarly rich vein of form at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Bonzi vs Zapata Miralles Prediction and Pick
Bernabe Zapata Miralles leads Benjamin Bonzi 1-0 in their head-to-head. That win came on the indoor hard courts in Quimper on the Challenger Tour a couple of years ago. As aforementioned in the article, Zapata Miralles has been the stronger and more consistent player on the red clay, having played more matches than Bonzi. The Spaniard makes his living on this surface and I expect him to outlast the Frenchman in another close three-setter.
