Botic van de Zandschulp faces Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics. The Dutchman has never won a main draw match at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Will he do so on Monday?

Botic van de Zandschulp’s clay-court swing didn’t start in the best possible fashion losing to Christopher O’Connell in the round of 16 in Marrakech despite going into that match as the odds-on favorite. He’s now lost two matches in a row for the second time this season, and the odds are stacked against him at the Monte-Carlo Masters when he opens up against Marton Fucsovics.

Marton Fucsovics, meanwhile, qualified for the Monte-Carlo Masters, winning a couple of qualifying rounds over the weekend. Fucsovics didn’t have an easy draw to get there, beating an in-form Giulio Zeppieri and Filip Krajinovic. The Hungarian has been intermittently brilliant this year. Among his highlights, he won a Challenger title in Canberra in the first week of the season and reached the round of 16 in Indian Wells.

Botic van de Zandschulp and Marton Fucsovics are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. van de Zandschulp reached a maiden ATP final on clay in Munich last season but sadly had to retire due to illness. His game is suited to almost every surface and he does possess a fluid forehand. But don’t expect him to have a relatively easier path in his opener against Marton Fucsovics. The Hungarian looks like he’ll draw a lot of confidence from his fine qualifying run at the Monte Carlo Masters and will settle much quicker having already played a couple of rounds here.
