TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Miomir Kecmanovic takes on Fernando Verdasco in the Round of 32 on Monday, September 20th, 2021.
Will Miomir Kecmanovic get some momentum going in the hopes of revitalising his 2021 season after a somewhat sub-par year? Will Fernando Verdasco show us that he is taking the right steps in getting back to being competitive on the ATP Tour after his surgeries? Both players can definitely compete here and put up a tough fight, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Astana Open. Who will it be?
Miomir Kecmanovic is on a 5-match losing streak at the moment, having not won a match since Wimbledon. Miomir is a very talented player, but the North American hard court swing was not good for him as he never really found his mojo and ended up losing a lot of confidence. Miomir is a great player on all surfaces with his amazing game, but he is definitely at his best in faster conditions where he can take time away from opponents. Here at the Astana Open he will be happy about the conditions because it is an indoor hard court tournament. However, he will also know that he has a tough draw right from the start as he meets a determined veteran of the game, in Fernando Verdasco, who is aiming to find some momentum here in Nur-Sultan.
Fernando Verdasco is coming into the 2021 Astana Open in the hopes of using the momentum he gained in the Mallorca Challenger to get himself competing on the main ATP Tour again. Fernando was an amazing player with great titles under his belt and amazing matches in the history of the game. However, in the last 2 years he has been hit with injuries to his knee and he has had a hard time getting back to his best. Fernando has not won a match on the ATP Tour since May of this year, but he knows that he can definitely get the ball rolling in these next 2 months if he just finds the confidence in his movement as right now he still seems to be struggling slightly. Can the Spaniard get the better of the much younger Miomir Kecmanovic?
Miomir Kecmanovic and Fernando Verdasco have met 1 time before, with Fernando Verdasco leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2019 at the Australian Open where Fernando won in straight sets. However, since then, their careers have done in different directions. Fernando is now 37 and trying to make a comeback to prove to himself he still has the game, whilst Miomir is young and determined to make a name for himself. If Fernando never had the injuries and was at his best, this would be an easy pick. However, with both players having struggled with form this year, I have to go with the player who has the least issues at the moment, Miomir Kecmanovic. It wont be easy, as Fernando Verdasco will have the confidence due to the head to head and he is also a lefty, but Miomir will make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Astana Open in the end.
