TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Gael Monfils takes on John Millman in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021.
Will Gael Monfils get back into form? Will John Millman get one of the biggest wins of his career in terms of ranking? This match-up will serve for an interesting one, where we will see one of the most exciting players of the ATP Tour attempt to get some good form under his belt against one of the biggest fighters on tour. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Gael Monfils has had a tough year in terms of tennis, he’s always been relatively consistent throughout his successful career as a tennis player. However, recently he’s fallen to injuries, as well as the way which he approached tennis during quarantine. Despite all of that, he’s just gotten married to top WTA player Elina Svitolina, now Elina Monfils. Perhaps he’ll be able to regroup and find his top level to be able to take out John Millman, it’ll be tough for him, and despite what his ranking might show you, Monfils is probably on the lower end of the top 50 right now based off what we have seen from him this year. He’s been struggling with a lot, particularly his service game as well as generally moving like he used to and producing powerful consistent groundstrokes. If he’s able to start serving well again, I think he’ll be able to feel confidence in his game and begin to play aggressive and pull out some of his brilliant tennis from the vintage Monfils at the 2021 Toronto Open.
John Millman is a pretty steady player, never producing anything too big but never producing anything too little for his capabilities either. That’s why when we look at him playing someone like Gael Monfils, who is a big question mark at the moment, it’s a little tough to figure out how he’d do against him. Millman relies on using his physicality to put in consistent groundstrokes, occasionally pulling the trigger, much like players such as RBA or PCB. For him to play someone like Gael Monfils ordinarily wouldn’t be a great matchup for him considering that Monfils is able to have a similar playstyle to him, just better and more aggressive overall. However, due to these circumstances, Millman has an excellent chance to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Gael Monfils and John Millman have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s most certainly a tough one to predict, and the match could go both ways. Gael has had an interesting pattern this year of losing many close matches. While he managed to win a couple, most of the matches he lost went either 3 sets in best of 3 matches, or 5 sets in, you guessed it, best of 5 matches. Considering the way John Millman plays, and his history this year, it’d be a good bet that this match will go 3 sets. In my mind, for Monfils it’ll be a mental battle of whether or not he can raise his level and play some aggressive, hard hitting tennis in the big moments to be able to get through it. It’s a tough one to predict, and you could go for either one, but it’ll definitely be an interesting one to see how they combat each other’s skill sets to fight for a spot in the next round at the 2021 Toronto Open.
