Top seeded Daniil Medvedev will be hoping to find some form here at the 2021 Mallorca Open as he concludes his Wimbledon preparations. The tall Russian struggled in Halle and will be desperate to have a long run here to get comfortable on the surface. In his way is the unseeded Frenchman Corentin Moutet, a talented player who is in some good form at the moment. Can he cause the upset here and knock the top seeded Medvedev out here in Mallorca?
Daniil Medvedev is ranked #2 on the ATP Tour, and is the top seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Russian has had a very mixed season so far in 2021, with good results on hard courts and a disappointing clay court season. However, he did find some form at the French Open, very surprisingly reaching the Quarter-Finals there and will be hoping to carry that over to Wimbledon. His grass court preparations hit a snag in Halle, where he was dumped out in the First Round by Jan-Lennard Struff. While he has not had much success on grass, he does have the game for the surface with a big serve and penetrating groundstrokes. His biggest issue is the movement, and as he gets more comfortable then the results will improve. He enters this match against Corentin Moutet as the favorite but may be in for a tough time here.
Corentin Moutet is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open and is ranked #85 on the ATP Tour. The young Frenchman is one of the brightest young talents on tour, but has been struggling to string consistent results together recently. He performed decently in Halle by reaching the Round of 16, and started strongly here in Mallorca with a comprehensive win over South African Lloyd Harris. The Frenchman returned extremely well against the big-serving Harris and was fantastic in attacking his opponent and taking all time away from him. Given his good start to the tournament he will be extremely confident here against the struggling Daniil Medvedev, and will have his eyes firmly set on the major upset. However, Medvedev is one of the best players in the world and will be a huge test even on this surface, and Moutet is considered the massive underdog here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and despite the huge gulf between their rankings it is expected to be a very close affair. Daniil Medvedev is ranked much higher than his French opponent but truly seems lost when moving on this surface, but it good enough to improve on that tremendously. Despite his game not being built for this surface, Corentin Moutet seems very comfortable on it and will provide the Russian with a stern test. It is a test that I do expect Medvedev to pass, although it will be very close. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this match go the distance, but ultimately the Russian has too much firepower and should come away with a hard fought win here at the 2021 Mallorca Open.
