Pablo Cuevas cruised through his opening round match against Lucas Pouille, beating the experienced Frenchman in straight sets 6-3/6-1/6-3. Pablo Cuevas is so fun to watch as he has one of the best games out there on the ATP Tour, especially when he plays in smaller ATP 250 or 500 tournaments. Pablo has a superb one-handed backhand and he is able to hit winners on both sides of the court with it. He will need for all of his fundamentals and all of his trickshots to be firing now as he meets the one and only Novak Djokovic in the Round of 64 here at Roland Garros. Can Pablo Cuevas get one of the biggest upsets of the tournament under his belt and shock everyone?
Novak Djokovic also cruised through his opening round match here, beating Tennys Sandgren in straight sets 6-2/6-4/6-2. Tennys Sandgren was trying everything to hurt Novak, but he was unable to keep up with the continuous long rallies and on the line balls that Novak Djokovic was hitting. When opportunities did present themselves, Tennys was not able to convert, and this gave Novak Djokovic more and more confidence in his game. Novak Djokovic will want to continue improving on that performance to ensure he is at his best for more important matches, but he will now meet a very tough opponent in Pablo Cuevas. Will he cruise here or will he face a tough and long match?
Shockingly for two players who have been playing professionally for 17 and 18 years respectively, they have never met before. Because of this, I think that Novak Djokovic will struggle a bit in the early stages of the match to understand how to respond to the Pablo Cuevas game. Pablo is an anomaly on the tour and he is able to change the way the game is played with his incredible talent. However, when coming up against Novak Djokovic at a grand slam such as the 2021 French Open, that will only take you so far. I think that Pablo can get a set under his belt here in the first two sets when Novak is still getting accustom to his game, but Novak will still win in the end.
