Basel Open 2022: Casper Ruud vs. Stan Wawrinka Tennis Pick and Prediction

Will Casper Ruud get the win? Will Stan Wawrinka pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have one of the worlds best taking on the legendary Stan Wawrinka who’s playing at home. Who will triumph and move through to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Basel Open?

Casper Ruud has had a bit of a weird stretch since the US Open, but he has shown his abilities on hard courts. Now though, as he moves to indoor hard courts, let alone a quick one like Basel, it’ll be very difficult to adjust to the conditions. Stan Wawrinka isn’t someone you can bet on anymore with his age and injuries, but at his best he’ll be very annoying for Casper Ruud to stop, so I expect a bit of a tussle here as the two clash for a place in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Basel Open.

Stan Wawrinka has been playing some solid tennis, with a good week in Marseille before dropping a couple close matches to quality opponents. As he comes up against Casper Ruud, he’ll know that in order to take this one, he’ll have to play very aggressively, and most importantly, serve well. I think Wawrinka absolutely could win this match, Ruud doesn’t love the quicker courts, and with the crowd and the tactics on Stan’s side, I expect Wawrinka to play his part here at the 2022 Basel Open.

Casper Ruud and Stan Wawrinka have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a good matchup for Wawrinka, who has the big serve, and who has the big flat backhand to take crosscourt, if he wants to win, he’s going to have to go to those two things throughout the match. From Casper Ruud, we can expect to see him trying to go crosscourt on the forehand and attack second serve returns and early on in the points to not get into the longer exchanges, where I don’t think he’ll be favored. While it may still be one long, uphill battle, I suspect that Stan the Man still has it in him to pull off this upset at home and move on to the last 16 of the 2022 Basel Open.
