ATP Finals 2021: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Casper Ruud Tennis Pick and Prediction

Tsitsipas vs Thompson Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Casper Ruud in the group stages on Wednesday, November 17th, 2021.

Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get the win? Will Casper Ruud pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a former champion taking on a newcomer. Who will make a comeback to grab their first win at the 2021 ATP Finals?

Stefanos Tsitsipas struggled against Rublev, losing in straight sets. Rublev certainly outplayed the Greek, but at times Tsitsipas just looked helpless, not being able to place a backhand in the court. He did serve pretty well, so if he can keep that up there’s hope against Casper Ruud, since he still is definitely the favorite in this one. However, Ruud is consistent, he doesn’t go for careless winners, and if Tsitsipas can’t put the ball in against him, he will lose. Tsitsipas hits a big ball, which Ruud has historically struggled with, but if Ruud is able to just consistently place the ball to his backhand and stay in the long rallies, with how inconsistently Tsitsipas is playing I think Ruud very well might pull off the upset as the two players clash to stay in the race to the semifinals at the 2021 ATP Finals.

Casper Ruud suffered a tough loss at the hands of Novak Djokovic, not a worrying loss by any means, especially considering he definitely pushed him in the first set. If Ruud is able to play that same way against Stefanos Tsitsipas, I expect him to be able to win, even if only narrowly. It really all revolves around the serve, as Tsitsipas still served pretty well in his loss, while Ruud dropped the second set 6-2, clearly dropping his service level. The thing for this match is neither player is doing well on fast courts right now, but since Ruud showed a level of consistent against Djokovic, and Tsitsipas has been struggling with injuries for a couple of months, Ruud has this upset within his grasp as he aims to stay make a comeback and go 1-1 at the 2021 ATP Finals.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their first meeting came on the clay, where Ruud surprisingly upset Tsitsipas, showing he knows how to play him. However, Tsitsipas came roaring back in Toronto, taking him out even more easily. Toronto was playing horrendously slow too, and that was before Ruud improved on hard courts. Looking at this matchup and the players’ recent form and wins, I have to back Casper Ruud to pull off the upset, but simply due to his inexperience and the fact that Tsitsipas has a big game, I expect the match to go 3 sets as Casper Ruud looks to pull off the upset at the 2021 ATP Finals.
