TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Hubert Hurkacz (1) faces Andy Murray in the Quarter-Finals on Friday September 24th, 2021.
A blockbuster is upon us here at the 2021 Moselle Open as top seeded Hubert Hurkacz will do battle with former world number one Andy Murray for a spot in the Semi-Finals. Hurkacz is in the middle of a breakout season this year but is running into the experience of Murray, who is seemingly back to full fitness after a long bout with injuries. Hurkacz is the clear favorite here, but the former Grand Slam champion Murray cannot be counted out as he has had quite a few impressive matches lately. Does he have what it takes to knock the number one seed out here in Metz?
Hubert Hurkacz is the number one seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is currently ranked #13 on the ATP Tour. The Polish star has had a breakout season so far, even though it has been a bit inconsistent. After claiming his first ever Masters-1000 title at the Miami Open he reached the Semi-Finals at Wimbledon in an impressive performance. Big things were expected of him for the remainder but he has largely underwhelmed, and will be hoping for some strong results to end the year on a high and potentially qualify for the year end event. He started with a bang so far here in Metz, cruising past former top 10 player Lucas Pouille in straight sets. While his game seems to be perfectly built for this surface he has never had great results which is very surprising. Hurkacz enters this match against Andy Murray as the favorite, but his inconsistency and Murray’s strong recent performances will give the Scotsman some hope.
Andy Murray is a former Grand Slam champion and world number one who currently finds himself ranked outside the top 100 at #113 due to numerous injuries and loss of form over the past few years. At one point it seemed like his career was over, but sheer determination has allowed him to play again and while his results have not been great, he is slowly beginning to regain his form. He was outstanding at the US Open, where he stretched world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas to five intense sets, and that seemed to show the world that he is finally back to his best. However, he had a shocking loss to Roman Saufilin at a Rennes Challenger which will have put a dent in his confidence. He put that behind him here at the 2021 Moselle Open, upsetting Ugo Humbert in the First Round before cruising past Vasek Pospisil in straight sets yesterday. In this sort of form he can give anyone some problems, and while he is the underdog here against Hubert Hurkacz he should never be fully counted out.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Hurkacz winning their only meeting earlier this year in Cincinnati. This should be a very close and intense match, with both players looking very good so far here at the 2021 Moselle Open. Hubert Hurkacz is the favorite here, and his huge serve and groundstrokes will be major weapons on this surface. However, Andy Murray is one of the most successful and experienced players on the ATP Tour and if he is at full strength, he is a very dangerous opponent. As good as Murray has been, I am going to go with Hurkacz here. His power game may be just enough to overcome the challenge from the former world number one, and I see him winning in three brutal sets here. Murray is certainly capable of winning here, but the smart money is on the fresher, fitter and more powerful player and that is Hubert Hurkacz, who will win here, advancing to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Moselle Open.
