Will Petra Martic go through? Will Ajla Tomljanovic pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Martic has the level to. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open?
Petra Martic is a pretty underrated player on the WTA Tour, holding her pretty high ranking for a reason. She’s definitely the favorite to take this one, and she most certainly has a fantastic opportunity to move on to the next round here at the 2021 US Open. Still, though, she’s not in the best form of her career, so she will need to stay pretty consistent, especially on serve, where she is not performing to the best of her ability at the moment. She did show some great mental resolve in her first match though, converting on 4/7 break points and winning in a pretty easy and swift straight sets, let’s see if she can translate that level to take on Ajla Tomljanovic.
Ajla Tomljanovic got a really nice win in her first round match, serving really well, with a first serve percentage of 68% and a win percentage on first serve of 89%, with a very solid 58% on second serve. While she could make a little more first serves, she won almost all the ones she made, which is really important taking on someone like Petra Martic who is such a good returner. I definitely think she can pull off the upset, considering how well she’s serving and the fact that she crushed her first round opponent even more than Martic did, we could definitely have a tough contest on our hands here, where we could see a potential upset from Tomljanovic as she tries to make the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open.
Petra Martic and Alja Tomljanovic have met twice before, with Petra Martic leading the head to head 2-0. They will both definitely be familiar with each other, both coming from the same country of Croatia originally even though Tomljanovic does play for Australia. Despite that, their last two meetings were actually over ten years ago, so they will have undoubtedly have changed a lot since then, so we can pretty much throw those numbers out the window. Just looking at current form, Martic is probably the slight favorite, but Tomljanovic I suspect will put up quite a fight, and may even pull off the upset. I however still think that Martic will prove to be just a little bit too strong and move on here at the 2021 US Open.
