TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Daniil Medvedev takes on Alexander Zverev in the Round Robin stage on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Alexander Zverev pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have two of the top players in the world fighting in a rematch of the Paris semifinals to go 2-0 in the groups. Who will grab their second win of the 2021 ATP Finals?
Daniil Medvedev played a shaky but solid match to grab the first ever win recorded at the ATP Finals in Turin. He has yet another tough one ahead of him in Alexander Zverev, the world no. 3 and a rematch of their semifinal clash just one week prior, where Medvedev crushed the German, taking him down 6-2 6-2. I don’t expect the same result by any means, but comparing the way that the two played today, and with their recent meetings all going the way of Medvedev, I expect him to take down Zverev in straights once again. Turin is playing super quick, so it took some time for Medvedev to adjust against a tough opponent, but once he got settled, he cruised through, serving brilliantly and moving exceptionally. As long as he is able to simply stay consistent and pull the trigger when he gets an opportunity, as well as serving consistently and ripping the return from far back, being able to defend and pass well, so essentially play the way that he always does, then I expect him to get the win and go 2-0 at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Alexander Zverev played an interesting match against Matteo Berrettini today, barely winning the first set 9-7 in the tiebreaker, before winning in a retirement from the Italian at 1-0 in the second. He was shaky the entire first set, not being able to capitalize on any opportunities he was getting, not converting any break points, as well as making needless unforced errors left and right. Not to mention his opponent was injured, so if Zverev wants to take down Daniil Medvedev, a player who he’s struggled against for some time now let alone their respective levels at the moment, he’s going to have to keep the points short, if they start to rally for a while, Medvedev will cruise past him. Let’s see if Zverev can raise his game to be aggressive and pull off the upset against a very tough opponent and manage to be the one to go ahead in his group at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have met 10 times before, with the head to head being tied at 5-5. Earlier in their careers, Zverev easily dominated their rivalry, but once Medvedev broke into the top, Medvedev has easily dominated him, which was demonstrated perfectly in their Paris meeting just one week ago, with Medvedev crushing him in straights. Zverev got tight, not being able to handle Medvedev’s defence, as well as just how consistent he was. The same factors will be at play come Tuesday, but this time, the courts are incredibly quick, which will allow Zverev to play more aggressively, so he will definitely want to try and keep the points short. This is a task much easier said than done however, and considering current conditions, I expect Medvedev to get this one done in straights as he aims to be the one to take the initiative and go ahead in the red group at the 2021 ATP Finals.
