Indian Wells 2022: Jannik Sinner vs. Benjamin Bonzi Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Indian Wells as Jannik Sinner takes on Benjamin Bonzi in the third round on Monday, March 14th, 2022.

Jannik Sinner, as expected, came through his second-round match at Indian Wells in routine fashion. Now he will face his first acid test at the tournament when he takes on an in-form Benjamin Bonzi who has won 11 of his last 12 matches across all competitions.

Jannik Sinner turned the tables around in his rivalry against Laslo Djere in his second-round match at Indian Wells. Sinner had lost to the Serbian in the previous two matches in of the series (both coming on the clay courts) just before he rose to prominence. But the Italian was a step ahead of Djere in every department, breaking his unseeded opponent four times to record a 6-3 6-3 win. Indian Wells is just the second ATP tournament that Sinner is playing under the tutelage of Simone Vagnozzi, having parted company with renowned coach Riccardo Piatti last month.

Benjamin Bonzi, meanwhile, recorded an upset win against the number 21 seed Lorenzo Sonego in his second-round match. Having beaten countryman Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round, Bonzi did not drop his level against the higher-ranked Sonego. Bonzi played with discipline throughout and stayed patient at the opportunities that presented themselves. Overall, he withstood eight aces from the Italian’s racket and converted three break points from 10 for the win.

Jannik Sinner leads the head-to-head over Benjamin Bonzi 1-0. That meeting took place at the 2020 French Open where Sinner won in straight sets. Sinner should be wary of Bonzi’s excellent form coming into this match. The Frenchman has won 11 of his last 12 matches and is pushing for a Top 50 debut before the end of the month. Bonzi also employs a gamestyle that is not too dissimilar to that of Sinner, using his foot speed to great effect and maximizing on his weight of shot. But I think the young Italian does both marginally better and should be able to slam the door shut for Bonzi.
