Reilly Opelka got a great win over Lorenzo Musetti, scoring a very rare breadstick set for himself, winning in straight sets without requiring a tiebreaker. He has a much tougher one ahead of him though coming up against Denis Shapovalov who got him down under. This court is very slow, so that’s automatically going to make things harder for Opelka whose serve will not be nearly as potent as on a faster surface. Shapovalov will have a lot of time on the other hand and will be getting into more rallies with Opelka, which really isn’t good for Opelka as Shapovalov aims to move on at Indian Wells 2022.
Denis Shapovalov got a tough win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, having dropped the first set to the in-form player and showing some mental strength to fight back and move on to this meeting with Reilly Opelka, another tough one. Shapovalov did not play his best tennis, but he still won, and he was serving pretty consistently. If he can do that against Opelka, I think he’ll beat him again, Opelka will have a hard time making inroads against a lefty who can hit as big as he does since you really need to be able to move around to deal with that which Opelka will obviously have a hard time with as he aims to stay in this one coming up against the Canadian No. 2 at Indian Wells 2022.
Reilly Opelka and Denis Shapovalov have met once before, with Denis Shapovalov leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came down under with Shapovalov taking it in 4 sets, while it was on fast courts, indicating that it would be even easier here, that match was still a little challenging along with Shapovalov also preferring a faster surface. If Opelka can manage to hold his serve, Shapovalov could very well lose – just like that. That’s why I expect this one to go the distance, but eventually for Shapovalov to turn it towards his favor and book a place in the Round of 16 at Indian Wells 2022.
