TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Lorenzo Sonego in the Semi-finals on Saturday, May 15th, 2021.
Will Lorenzo Sonego be able to cause another huge upset this week in Rome as he looks to make his way to the Final by beating Novak Djokovic again? Will Novak Djokovic be able to put on another solid performance when his back is pushed against the wall and look to defend his title? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will. Who will it be?
Lorenzo Sonego has just been incredible all week here at the 2021 Rome Open, beating the likes of Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev. Sonego came back from a set down against Rublev to win in 3 3-6/6-4/6-3. Now, Lorenzo Sonego will have to face the World No.1 in Novak Djokovic on the same day due to the rain yesterday having moved all the matches to today! Lorenzo will have a lot of confidence coming into this match because his flamboyant playing style is incredible this week, and he has already beaten Djokovic recently, winning in straight sets last year at the Vienna Open. However, Djokovic will be out for revenge, can the Italian cause the upset again with the Italian crowd pushing him forward?
Novak Djokovic was able to withstand the storm both from the clouds, but also on the court from Stefanos Tsitsipas, beating the Greek in 3 tight sets 4-6/7-5/7-5. Novak Djokovic had to come back from a break down in both the second and the third set (with Tsitsipas serving for the match at 5-4 in the third). However, although Novak Djokovic showed great composure and fought right until the end to get the victory, the real reason why he won the match was because Stefanos Tsitsipas had lost concentration mentally thinking he’d cruise through his last service game. Tsitsipas let his guard down, and let Djokovic back into the match and paid the price. Now, Novak will want revenge against Lorenzo Sonego for his defeat to the Italian last year in Vienna.
Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Sonego have met 1 time before, with Lorenzo Sonego leading the head to head 1-0. They met towards the end of last year in the Quarter-finals of the Vienna Open where Lorenzo Sonego put on the performance of a lifetime and won 6-2/6-1. Although Lorenzo won, Novak happily admitted afterwards that he did not push himself in that match because he did not need to as he had already achieved the points needed to get the Year-End World No.1 title. Lorenzo still put on an amazing performance, but I am very sure that Novak will come out in this Semi-final as the 2021 Rome Open ready to give it his all and get his revenge. Both players will definitely be tired after having to play a match earlier in the day due to rain yesterday, but Novak will win.
