TennisSection previews the 2022 Barcelona Open as Dan Evans takes on Lorenzo Musetti in the second round on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022.
Will Dan Evans gain a valuable win over a resurgent Lorenzo Musetti at the Barcelona Open? The Briton is regarded as one of the weakest clay-court players in the Top 100, but as he proved at the Monte Carlo Masters last year, he is capable of adjusting to the sport’s most demanding surface.
Dan Evans played a fine a tournament in Monte Carlo last year, scoring wins over Novak Djokovic, Hubert Hurkacz and David Goffin. But he could not recreate those memories 12 months on. Evans bombed out of the tournament in the second round, against Goffin who earned his revenge in a routine straight sets win. He is 9-8 for the season and has failed to win back-to-back matches since setting foot out of Australian soil. Consequently, he is now languishing outside the Top 30 in the rankings, a significant drop in the span of a few weeks. Can he rediscover the winning touch on his return to the Barcelona Open?
Lorenzo Musetti is expected to pile more misery on Dan Evans if recent results are anything to go by. While Evans has struggled for consistency, Musetti has enjoyed a renaissance in the past few weeks. It was coincidental that the young Italian waited patiently for a return to clay to hit top form. With a quarterfinals in Marrakech in the bag, Musetti came within a set of upsetting Diego Schwartzman in Monte Carlo but ultimately fell in three sets in their Round of 16 encounter. The one-handed Italian has since managed to return to winning ways at the Barcelona Open where he beat 21-year-old Argentine Sebastian Baez 7-5 7-5.
Lorenzo Musetti leads the head-to-head 1-0, beating Evans in their only meeting on the clay of Cagliari last season. Evans’ confidence is at an all-time low having struggled to win a lot of matches of late. Unless Musetti completely capitulates, this looks like a fairly routine win in the books for the young Italian in his second-round match at the Barcelona Open.
