TennisSection previews the 2022 Estoril Open as Dominic Thiem takes on Benjamin Bonzi in the first round on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022.
Dominic Thiem is set to compete at the Estoril Open for the first time after taking a wild card spot in the main draw. The Austrian is on the comeback trail and will be seeking his first win of the season when he takes on the fast-improving Benjamin Bonzi. Who will prevail?
Dominic Thiem has finally been able to pick up a tennis racket which is nice to see. The powerful Austrian endured a long battle with a wrist problem he picked up last summer that forced him out of action for nearly nine months. Thiem’s comeback was marred by a series of setbacks including a recent bout of Covid-19. But having seen the back of his troubles, he returned to action at the Marbella Challenger at the end of last month. He also played at the Belgrade Open last week. Defeats to Pedro Cachin in Spain and most recently John Millman in Serbia have prevented the 28-year-old from making a winning return to action. Will he get his first W of the season at the Estoril Open where he will be making his tournament debut?
Benjamin Bonzi will have plenty to say about that. The Frenchman has played some solid tennis on the ATP Challenger Tour in the past 12 months, highlighted by his six titles during the course of an outstanding 2021 season. Bonzi hasn’t stopped winning at that level. He added another trophy from the Cherbourg Challenger in February taking his tally to seven. Those accomplishments are close to earning Bonzi a place in the world’s Top 50 and is making steady progress on the ATP Tour. Will he master Dominic Thiem at the Estoril Open?
Dominic Thiem and Benjamin Bonzi have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match at the Estoril Open will be their official meeting. Surface preference heavily favors Thiem and he showed improved mobility in Belgrade. If he can find the right balance between the forehand and his backhand (which looked to be firing quite nicely), he might have too much power for the less-experienced Bonzi on a clay court.
