TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Coco Gauff takes on Sloane Stephens in the Round of 64 on Wednesday, September 1st, 2021.
Will Coco Gauff go through? Will Sloane Stephens pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see one of the youngest players on the WTA Tour, and one of the most talented ones at that take on a former champion here at the US Open. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open?
Coco Gauff got through in three sets after dropping the first one, playing some pretty solid tennis to move through to the next round. While she could and should have played better, she still showed good mental resolve and consistency to take out her opponent in three. She has a harder opponent in front of her in Sloane Stephens, who is ranked lower than her and is not playing as well, but still is dangerous and is a former champion of the U.S Open. Gauff will need to play a little more consistent and focus on serving better than she did, as that was definitely an area of her game that wasn’t as good as it usually was. She will also have to play a little more aggressively in my mind, as that’s something she does well and she didn’t really utilize today, and she’ll definitely want to try and do it more and more if she wants to progress further at the 2021 US Open.
Sloane Stephens played a relatively solid match, although I do not believe she was at the level of Coco Gauff, she still took out a dangerous opponent in a thriller. I do think she will definitely have to step up her level for when she comes up against Gauff, though, as she’s one of the most in-form players on the WTA Tour at the moment and simply playing some average tennis won’t cut it. She’ll definitely want to try and stay away from being too aggressive, especially in tight moments as Gauff is quite good under pressure and likes to play defense when she has to, so I think Stephens will need to try and just get into long rallies, if she can tire Gauff out then I feel like she has a good shot to move through to the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open.
Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s not too versatile of a match-up in my opinion, with both players having pretty well rounded games and more or less using similar tactics. However, in this match, Gauff should try and play more aggressively while Stephens should try and be a little bit more conservative in the way that she plays, mostly trying to draw out errors or get short and easy balls that then become essentially free points in most occasions. I also think the serve will be quite important, and while I think Gauff will win the match, I foresee a tight contest as both players try to secure a spot in the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open.
