TennisSection previews the 2021 Barcelona Open as Andrey Rublev (3) meets Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Third Round on Thursday, April 22nd 2021.
Will Albert Ramos-Vinolas cause the upset to get one of the best results of his career under his belt in the last couple of years? Will Andrey Rublev improve on his first match here at the 2021 Barcelona Open where he had some issues both with his racket and his temper? Both players are great tennis players when on top of their game, but only one will win this match. Who will it be?
Albert Ramos-Vinolas was able to come through a very tight two set match against Adrian Mannarino in the Second Round, beating the Frenchman 6-4/6-4. Albert Ramos-Vinolas is a very experienced player in these clay court conditions, a former Masters 1000 Finalist, and just a player who will stay in a match for an extremely long time in the hopes of wearing down his opponents. Albert, although in solid form here at the 2021 Barcelona Open, will have to ensure he is able to raise his level even higher as he meets one of the best players of the moment in Andrey Rublev.
Andrey Rublev, although he won his Second Round match in straight sets 6-4/6-3 against Federico Gaio, will want to have a better day at the office in the Third Round. This is due to Rublev having a lot of issues with the his rackets not coming back to him in time from the stringer which made him have to play with another racket, and this eventually led to a bit of a temper coming from the Russian. Andrey Rublev will have to ensure he maintains his composure if this happens in bigger and tougher matches in the future as he will not be given easy points or matches from the likes of Albert Ramos-Vinolas here at the 2021 Barcelona Open.
Andrey Rublev and Albert Ramos-Vinolas have met 3 times before, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 2-1. The last time they met was in 2019, where Rublev came through a tight 3-setter on a hard court. Although all their prior matches have been extremely tight, I expect this one to be a strong performance by the Russian. Andrey Rublev has raised his level incredibly over the last 2 years, and he will not let Albert Ramos-Vinolas stand in his way as he looks to make his way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Barcelona Open.
