TennisSection previews the 2022 Pune Open as Lorenzo Musetti (2) meets Kamil Majchrzak in the Quarter-Finals on Friday February 4th, 2022.
Promising Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti is aiming to reach his first Semi-Final of the new season here at the 2022 Pune Open. The second seed will next face Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in what seems like a mismatch on paper, but his opponent is in good form so far this week. Who will move on and get a chance to play for a spot in the Final?
Lorenzo Musetti is the second seed this week here at the 2022 Pune Open and is ranked #66 on the ATP Tour. The young Italian burst onto the scene a few years ago with a few big upset wins and has since developed into one of the best young players in the world. After a strong 2021 season he has struggled thus far in 2022, losing in the first Round of Adelaide and the Australian Open to start the year. He will be hoping to bounce back strongly here in Pune, and started with a win over Aleksandar Vukic in three sets. While that win was unconvincing, it would have given him a much needed confidence boost, and he heads into this Quarter-Final against Kamil Majchrzak as the favorite to move on.
Kamil Majchrzak is unseeded here at the 2022 Pune Open, and is ranked within the top 100 in the world, at number 95. He started strongly here with two straight sets wins over Jay Clarks and Quentin Halys, but is yet to be truly tested. That will change in the Quarter-Finals as he is up against the dangerous Lorenzo Musetti in a match where he enters as the underdog. His serve has been fantastic so far and he will be looking for that to carry him past the young Italian. He has had a decent start to the year and will be looking to continue riding that momentum forward in the hope of reaching his first ATP Semi-Final.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and based on their current form this match should be a close and interesting one. Lorenzo Musetti is the bigger name and is the favorite on paper, but Kamil Majchrzak has been in better form to start the year and looks good on the hard courts, where the Italian is more comfortable on clay. However, I think that Musetti has too much quality to lose here, and while it may not be smooth sailing he should get the win here. He has a lot of weapons, particularly his backhand and I expect him to eventually find his rhythm, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2022 Pune Open.
