Pune Open 2022: Aslan Karatsev vs. Elias Ymer Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Pune Open as Aslan Karatsev takes on Elias Ymer in the Round of 16 on Thursday, February 3rd, 2021.

Will Aslan Karatsev get the win? Will Elias Ymer pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the top seed and top 20 ranked player Karatsev taking on a young prospect. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Pune Open?

Aslan Karatsev is of course the heavy favorite, being able to play a massive game at the highest level as he’s shown time and time again, even taking down World No. 1 Novak Djokovic last year. Elias Ymer is the younger brother of his slightly more successful brother Mikael Ymer, also a young prospect, if Ymer wants to be able to do anything in this match, he’ll have to hope that Karatsev has a bad day. It’s possible, but a player of his quality will likely take down Ymer rather easily even on a bad day. Let’s see if the top seed can get a good start to his campaign here at the 2022 Pune Open.

Elias Ymer got through to this match in 3 sets against a less known player. If he can barely get past that stage, I doubt he’ll be able to take down the overwhelming favorite in top 20 player Aslan Karatsev. Karatsev plays a perfect game for a court like this, playing super aggressively on every end of his game, while being able to make a seemingly low number of unforced errors if he’s playing well. I expect him to win this one quite easily to progress to the next round here at the 2022 Pune Open.

Aslan Karatsev and Elias Ymer have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Karatsev had a slight problem down under, where he was definitely tired and struggling with something in his leg, not being able to play his highest level, but still showing a great level beforehand despite that. I would assume he’s recovered by this point, and if he can stay healthy, I think he’s looking good to carry over his form to a lot more tournaments than last year, perhaps furthering his ranking into the top 10 where he can most certainly make some ripples in the tennis world. Let’s see if the top seed can get past this first hurdle and move on to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Pune Open.
