Wimbledon Championships 2021: Andrey Rublev vs. Federico Delbonis Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Andrey Rublev (5) meets Federico Delbonis in the First Round on Monday June 28th, 2021.

Fifth seeded Russian Andrey Rublev will face unseeded Federico Delbonis of Argentina in the First Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Rublev has established himself as one of the best players in the world over the past two years and will be seeking to do well here at the All-England Club. Can the veteran Delbonis cause the massive upset and advance here?

Andrey Rublev has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the rankings over the past few years, and is now sitting on a career-high #7 ranking on the ATP Tour. He won five titles last season and will be looking to win his maiden Grand Slam title here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. While he has performed well at the other majors, he has never advanced past the Second Round at Wimbledon and will be hoping to break that streak this year. He had some good preparation for this event by reaching the Final in Halle, and is in good form on grass at the moment. His powerful groundstrokes are a major weapon especially on this fast surface, and he is the big favorite here against Federico Delbonis.

Federico Delbonis is currently ranked #48 on the ATP Tour, and is a very experienced player. The Argentine has won two titles on the Tour, but is considered a clay court specialist, and tends to struggle on the quicker surfaces. Despite him being in the world top 50, he is extremely uncomfortable on grass and is not expected to do much here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. He shockingly has never won a match here at the All-England Club, and this will be his sixth attempt. While he will be eager to finally break that streak, he is coming up against one of the best players in the world in Andrey Rublev, and his chances of advancing here are extremely slim.

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and all signs are pointing towards a comfortable win for the Russian star. Andrey Rublev has improved immensely over the past two years, and while he has never had much success before on grass, he showed a ton of potential in Halle, and is a major threat to reach the second week here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Like some of the other top hard court players he struggles a bit with his movement on grass, but he is too good to not figure it out, and I expect him to defeat Federico Delbonis with relative ease, advancing to the Second Round.
