TennisSection previews the 2022 Montpellier Open as Roberto Bautista Agut takes on Gilles Simon in the second round on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2022.
Will Roberto Bautista Agut return to winning ways at the 2022 Montpellier Open? Or will Gilles Simon delight the home support with a rare top-20 win on Wednesday? This is an intriguing matchup, but the onus is certainly on the Spaniard to produce the goods after his Australian Open disappointment.
Roberto Bautista Agut will be keen to atone for his failure to see off Taylor Fritz in their third-round match at the recently-concluded Australian Open. The Spaniard led the American by two sets to one, before quickly relinquishing control of the match and ultimately losing in five sets. Defeat stung so hard, but the World No. 19 has a massive chance to bounce back from that desolation. Bautista Agut returns to the Montpellier Open for just the third time in his career. He finished runner-up to David Goffin in last year’s edition. Could he go one better this time?
Firstly, Bautista Agut will need to overcome a seemingly innocuous second-round match against Gilles Simon. Having received a bye in his opener, the Spanish baseliner ought to progress into the quarterfinals, but Simon will be buoyed to keep his frenetic run going at the Montpellier Open. The veteran Frenchman could not rely on a wild card entrant, and instead fought off the challenges of Marc-Andrea Huesler and Antoine Hoang in the qualies. Victory over Lucas Pouille in the main draw was registered in three sets, in match with very little to separate between the two players.
Gilles Simon leads Roberto Bautista Agut 5-2 in their head-to-head. But while this is a lopsided rivalry in favour of the Frenchman, none of Simon’s wins came after 2018. So the head-to-head is redundant. Bautista Agut is vastly the superior player on current form as evident with his return to the world’s top 20. The Spaniard should be tested though, with Simon already familiar with the indoor conditions having played three matches this week.
