TennisSection previews the 2021 Miami Open as Naomi Osaka (2) meets Nina Stojanovic in the Third Round on Sunday March 28th, 2021.
Can the unseeded Serbian Nina Stojanovic cause what would be one of the most shocking upsets of the year? Or will the second seeded superstar Naomi Osaka of Japan breeze through into the Round of 16 as expected? This match seems very straightforward on paper but that isn’t always the case. Who will win and advance to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Miami Open?
Naomi Osaka is currently ranked #2 in the WTA world rankings and is truly a global tennis superstar. Unbeaten so far this season, she is the heavy favorite to take the title here at the 2021 Miami Open. The holder of four Grand Slam titles, she struggled a bit in her Second Round win over Ajla Tomljanovic 7-6, 6-4. She was her usual aggressive self, serving well but committing way too many unforced errors. As she hasn’t played a tournament in a while some rust was expected. Luckily for her, she will face another lowly-ranked opponent who should afford her the luxury of working herself back into shape. Osaka enters this match as the heavy favorite against Nina Stojanovic and it would truly be a shock for her to lose here at the 2021 Miami Open.
Nina Stojanovic of Serbia is currently ranked #95 in the world and has been as high as #81. She has had a very poor start to the 2021 season, losing in the early rounds of every tournament that she has played thus far. She would have been hoping to win a few rounds here at the 2021 Miami Open to get her season back on track, but unfortunately has been handed one of the toughest draws imaginable against superstar Naomi Osaka. After qualifying for this event, she has had two impressive wins over Heather Watson and Yulia Putinseva, so her confidence will be at an all-time high. She enters this match as a huge underdog and will have to play the match of her life to make this even remotely competitive.
The two players have never faced each other on the WTA Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. Despite Nina Stojanovic being very impressive throughout the Qualifying Rounds and Opening Rounds, there will only be one outcome here. Naomi Osaka is the best player in the world despite the #2 ranking and is simply a much better player than her Serbian opponent. Stojanovic is solid, but lacks the weapons to even slightly trouble the Japanese superstar. Expect a very comfortable straight-sets win for Naomi Osaka here at the 2021 Miami Open.
