Alexander Zverev is making a rare appearance in the first week of February. Will he get the win in his first match at the 2022 Montpellier Open? Or will Mackenzie McDonald register the biggest upset of the week?
Alexander Zverev is the top seed at this week’s Montpellier Open. Zverev will be looking to bulldoze his way into the final and add a 20th ATP title to his trophy cabinet. But the German is facing some stiff competition even in the absence of a host of Top 10 players. Add to the fact he lost early at the Australian Open a couple of weeks ago, and there is the likelihood of Zverev losing his bearings at a low-key ATP tournament this week. Having received a bye in his opening round, Zverev begins his campaign on Thursday against the perpetually tough Mackenzie McDonald.
Mackenzie McDonald warmed up nicely for his meeting against Alexander Zverev after getting the better of Ilya Ivashka. McDonald was too sharp and always a step ahead of the big-hitting Belarusian in their first-round match at the Montpellier Open. He out-aced Ivashka (which is slightly surprising considering his stature), and broke serve three times. McDonald closed out an impressive straight sets win with a domineering tiebreak.
Alexander Zverev leads Mackeznie McDonald 1-0 in their head-to-head. That match was played on the outdoor hard courts of Acapulco in 2018. Zverev is making his return to the Montpellier Open for the first time since winning the title in 2017. The German will be keen to address his Australian Open mishap after falling the in the Round of 16 stage. After years of stalled progress due to injuries, McDonald is playing injury-free and is reaping rewards. He will soon crack the world’s top-50 in the next few weeks, clearly implying he is no slouch. But nonetheless, I expect the former champion to make a real statement on Thursday.
