Indian Wells 2021: Jannik Sinner vs. John Isner Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Jannik Sinner takes on John Isner in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021.

Will Jannik Sinner move on? Will John Isner pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a next-gen star coming up against a veteran and the crowd favorite. Who will move onto the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?

Jannik Sinner got a great win to set up this meeting with John Isner, continuing his run of great form since defending his title last week in Sofia. He has a great shot to come through here to the last 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open, but it won’t be easy at all. Sinner doesn’t quite yet have all the experience to deal with all sorts of different playstyles. And while his game does have the potential to be very versatile, it isn’t the best game to deal with a game like John Isner, with the huge serve and lots of tiebreakers. Still, Sinner has lost to him before, and with him being so young and in such good form, he is constantly adapting, so I do expect him to edge this one out to move through to the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open, but it’ll be tight.

John Isner got a really solid win over Nishioka, winning 6-3 6-4 to set up this meeting with Jannik Sinner. When Isner is able to break his opponents serve, then you know that he’s in good form. Still, he has to take on a top 20 player who just won a title and easily stormed through a tough opponent in his first round. While Isner most certainly has a chance, as Sinner’s game simply isn’t really built to take on someone like him, Sinner is just playing so much better at the moment that he will likely be dominating on his serve and from the back of the court. Let’s see if Isner can do his job and serve up an exhibition to take it to Sinner and make this a close one as the two fight for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.

Jannik Sinner and John Isner have met once before, with John Isner leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in Cincinnati, with Isner winning in three tight sets after dropping the first. That court plays fast, but here in Indian Wells the conditions are super slow, which definitely doesn’t help Isner’s serve, in fact, it should give Sinner a little bit more time to do what he does best and hit some huge returns off those big serves. Especially since he’ll be learning from the defeat last time and be able to adapt to the conditions better than Isner. Let’s see if he can put on a good show and get through this tough test as he attempts to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
