TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Benoit Paire takes on Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, August 25th, 2021.
Will Benoit Paire continue his run? Will Emil Ruusuvuori pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have the reformed Benoit Paire taking on a next-gen star. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
Benoit Paire has recently had a great run at the Cincinnati Open, seemingly regaining confidence in himself and giving his all in matches, using his incredible backhand, touch, and serve. He defeated a fellow Frenchman in Gilles Simon in his first match, in a solid straight sets, serving and returning well just as he was doing last week. He most certainly is not in for an easy win this time though, having to face the youngster Emil Ruusuvuori who pulled off the upset on Bublik. With both playing some great tennis, it should be a fun match, I think it will mostly depend on whether or not Benoit is able to return pretty well, Ruusuvuori does not have the best serve, so I think if Paire gets a hold of a few serves and starts to play that attacking tennis we know he likes to play, I like his chances to get a pretty solid win and progress to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Emil Ruusuvuori got a great win in his last match, having upset Alexander Bublik in straight sets, while Bublik most certainly was not at his best, Ruusuvuori still played some solid tennis, staying consistent and being able to draw the errors out. If he was facing the Benoit Paire of a couple of months ago, he would very much most probably win. However, he is up against a guy who is pulling off a lot of magic, using his cracking backhand and versatile play to really play some pretty aggressive tennis and throw off his opponents. Emil Ruusuvuori will obviously have to primarily keep the ball in play to Benoit’s forehand, and if he can get in a lot of exchanges with Paire going crosscourt to crosscourt, and pulling the trigger down the line, I really like his chances to win the match. However, this is most definitely easier said than done, as it will be difficult to consistently set those scenarios up, particularly on return, even on serve if Paire attacks him, I don’t see a lot of opportunities for Emil to defend himself too well from that and take him out in that kind of situation which is pretty likely.
Benoit Paire and Emil Ruusuvuori have met once before, with Emil Ruusuvuori leading the head to head 1-0. Their one and only meeting did come this year, earlier when Paire was more or less tanking, and Paire did manage to take the first set, before losing the second one and retiring. So, this match is obviously not a particularly good representation of what we’ll see tomorrow, with Benoit playing much better nowadays than he was then, and he still won the first set last time. It will be interesting to see what happens, however, the cards are looking to be primarily in Benoit Paire’s favor, having all the aggression and the superiority on serve to fight past Emil Ruusuvuori to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
