Madrid Open 2023: Borna Coric vs. Daniel Altmaier Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open quarterfinal match featuring Borna Coric vs. Daniel Altmaier on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.

Borna Coric vs. Daniel Altmaier Preview

Neither Borna Coric nor Daniel Altmaier has been to a Masters 1000 semifinal on clay. But that will change at the Madrid Open when the pair clash on Wednesday. Who will prevail?

Borna Coric has definitely turned a corner at the 2023 Madrid Open. Having arrived at the Spanish capital with a 7-9 record for the season and losing five matches in a row, not many people gave Coric the faintest of hopes to reach the second week. He’s managed to navigate a couple of tricky rounds against Hugo Gaston and Hubert Hurkacz. And he produced his best display of the season, albeit with a fortuitous moment deep in the third-set tiebreak, to defeat home favorite Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a marathon three-setter.

Daniel Altmaier, meanwhile, has had a rollercoaster fortnight at the Madrid Open. He suffered a surprise loss in the second round of qualifying to Jurij Rodionov, but he entered the main draw as a lucky loser. Since then he’s beaten everybody lying in his wake, including a couple of countrymen. He has yet to lose a set in the main draw, can he defend his first-seeded opponent of the fortnight?

Borna Coric vs. Daniel Altmaier Prediction and Pick

Borna Coric and Daniel Altmaier have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this quarterfinal match at the Madrid Open being their first meeting. Coric will need to recover pretty quickly with a window of less than 24 hours following his marathon win over Davidovich Fokina which took three and a half hours. Altmaier has showcased his talent on this surface in a big event, evoking memories of his stunning run to the fourth round of the French Open three years ago. Still, the German has yet to play a top-20 caliber opponent during the week and will play second fiddle to Coric here, with the Croat having turned a corner in this tournament and appearing to be rock solid to break down.
