TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Mackenzie McDonald in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 18th, 2021.
Will Mackenzie McDonald get the biggest win of his career under his belt against an opponent who has been in amazing form last week? Will Daniil Medvedev continue to cruise through opponents and build more momentum as we get closer to the US Open? This is going to be a very interesting battle, but how much can Mackenzie McDonald take off of Daniil Medvedev here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
Mackenzie McDonald put on a very solid performance in his first match here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open, beating his fellow American Brandon Nakashima, in straight sets, 7-5/6-2. Mackenzie McDonald has been in great form recently, reaching the final in Washington a couple weeks ago. Mackenzie has a very solid game, with a powerful serve and forehand. McDonald is also a good mover around the court, so he can hang in long rallies. However, he now meets probably the best or second best mover on hard courts in Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev is coming off of winning his 4th Masters 1000 title and he has been in great form recently, cruising through big name opponents and getting himself ready to give it his all for a potential US Open title run at the end of the month. Daniil is ready to dominate and he does not want to lose any momentum, so he will come into the 2021 Cincinnati Open ready to give it his all. Medvedev is just returning everything and he returns it with interest, not being afraid of anyones playing style. Medvedev will know he cannot afford to lose so early to someone as lower ranked like Mackenzie McDonald, so he will come out to dominate.
Daniil Medvedev and Mackenzie McDonald have met 4 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 4-0. Medvedev has never lost a set against McDonald and although Mackenzie comes into this match with nothing to lose and he will aim to give it his all, Daniil Medvedev is just on another level at the moment. Daniil has been dominating every match recently and he has met much tougher opponents than McDonald. Mackenzie would have loved for an easier draw, but Medvedev will not let him win much as the big Russian eases his way into the Round of 16 of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
