TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Iga Swiatek (8) meets Anett Kontaveit (30) in the Round of 32 on Saturday, June 5th 2021.
Will Anett Kontaveit build on her dominant performance in the Round of 64 as she looks to cause what would be the biggest upset of the week? Will Iga Swiatek continue to be a beast on clay and specifically here at Roland Garros as she has only lost 7 games in 2 matches. This is not a question of can Kontaveit cause the upset, but more a question of how much can she get under her belt in this match to prevent an embarrassing loss to Swiatek?
Anett Kontaveit beat the fan-favourite here in Paris, Kristina Mladenovic, in the Round of 64 in straight sets 6-2/6-0. Anett Kontaveit absolutely dominated that match and she was just not giving up on anything at any time. Kontaveit will want to keep this going and get herself into the Round of 16 of the 2021 French Open, however, she will have to raise her level even more because she now meets Iga Swiatek who serves opponents 6-0 and 6-1 sets for fun. Anett is an experienced player and she can definitely beat big named when she’s at her best, but I am unsure if she can do that against Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros.
Iga Swiatek dominated her Round of 64 match, beating Rebecca Peterson in straight sets 6-1/6-1. Iga Swiatek has been in great form this year on clay and she is not wasting any time in sending a message to the rest of the draw that she is the woman to beat on clay. Iga has such a strong game, and she hits shot with such power, accuracy, and confidence, which is not found all at once in many WTA Tour players. Iga will now want to continue dominating especially as Ashleigh Barty is no longer in the draw, and she will be ready to give it her best tennis against Anett Kontaveit in the Round of 32 of the 2021 French Open.
Iga Swiatek and Anett Kontaveit have met 2 times before, with Anett Kontaveit leading the head to head 2-0. They have only ever met on a hard court, and their matches have always been very tight. Due to this head to head, Kontaveit will have some confidence coming into this match. However, because we are on clay where Iga Swiatek seems to shine above everyone else in the WTA Tour, I still see the Pole winning. It will be tight just because of their previous encounters, but Iga will come out on top in the end to make her way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 French Open.
