Sinner took down Safiullin in straight sets at the ATP Cup last year, with a tough first set but an overall convincing match. Safiullin hits a big ball, and he can take it to Sinner, but the Italian is looking solid and has some experience on the grass from last year, and he should be considered the clear favorite.

Jannik Sinner took down Daniel Elahi Galan in straight sets, and should he win against Roman Safiullin, he would have made it to the semifinal without playing a seeded opponent. Although this is considered good fortune for Sinner having a “lucky” draw, it puts a lot of pressure on Sinner to actually make it through.

Meanwhile, Safiullin has been busting seeds out of the draw and is playing some really great grass-court tennis. It’s his best showing at Grand Slam level and more than makes up for his no-show in the French Open qualies where he forgot to sign up in time.

I expect Sinner to struggle a little, as is normal this deep in such a tournament (and there were a few tricky moments against Galan), but I still think he’ll get through in convincing fashion to book his very first grand slam semifinal at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
