Pegula vs Vondrousova Prediction
Jessica Pegula and Marketa Vondrousova will contest a Wimbledon quarterfinal for the very first time. Pegula, the fourth seed, eased past Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-3, and completes the quartet of reaching the last eight at all four majors. It’s the sixth time Pegula has won a fourth-round match at a slam in six attempts, but she’s never conquered the quarterfinal hurdle, something that has been playing on the back of her mind for some time. Could Pegula be due for a win at last?
She will take on Marketa Vondrousova, the crafty Czech left-hander who before this week, had won one main draw match at Wimbledon in her last four participations. The unseeded Vondrousova has taken out two premier athletes on grass, namely Veronika Kudermetova and Donna Vekic, both in straight sets. Her toughest bout in the first week came in the fourth round when she played compatriot Marie Bouzkova. She rallied from a set down to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, finishing with 37 winners, but a personal high of 44 unforced errors at the Championships.
This should be a very interesting matchup. Pegula is a sharp-witted baseliner, reads the game extremely well, and possesses excellent decision-making abilities. Vondrousova’s control of drop shots and slices could disrupt Pegula’s rhythm. The Czech also has a very effective slider serve, but serving to Pegula’s strongest wing, might not yield the same results as in previous rounds. Nonetheless, I won’t be surprised to see Vondrousova nab a set here, but we fancy Pegula to eventually get over the quarterfinal roadblock.
