TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Aslan Karatsev meets Lorenzo Musetti in the First Round on Monday April 12th, 2021.
This is a showdown between two of the most impressive players on the ATP Tour this season. Aslan Karatsev of Russia is the front-runner for the most improved player award and has been simply outstanding so far in 2021. Italian Lorenzo Musetti is one of the most promising young players in world tennis today and also has been having a fantastic year. Can he cause what would be a stunning upset here in Monaco?
Aslan Karatsev is currently ranked a career-high #27 in the ATP World rankings and has a tremendous 16-3 ranking on the year. Very surprisingly, this will be his ATP Tour debut on clay at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, showing exactly how quick his rise has been. He has been one of the standout players this year, reaching the Semi-Finals at the Australian Open and winning his first career title in Dubai. While it will be interesting to see how his game translates to clay, he has won five tournaments on the surface at Challenger level, proving that he is no slouch. The Russian enters this match as the favorite against Lorenzo Musetti but knows that he has a tough challenge here, as the young phenom is also having a career year. Karatsev is not quite as flashy as his opponent but his steady and consistent game will make him hard to beat here.
Lorenzo Musetti is one of the top young talents on the ATP Tour, and is ranked a career high #90 in the world. At only 19 years of age he has played some fantastic tennis so far in 2021, and it seems like the sky is the limit for this talented Italian. He stunned the tennis world last month by reaching the Semi-Finals in Acapulco, upsetting Diego Schwartzman, Grigor Dimitrov and Frances Tiafoe in the process. He then reached the Third Round in Miami and his confidence will be at an all-time high here in Monaco. The young star has a huge game, with explosive groundstrokes that allow him to dominate opponents from the baseline. While he enters this match against Aslan Karatsev as the underdog, he is more at home on the clay than the Russian, and will be confident of causing yet another upset here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
This will be the first time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This is definitely the pick of the First Round matches and tennis fans will not want to miss what is sure to be a fantastic display of tennis. Both players are aggressive baseliners and there will be lots of long rallies and flashy winners. If this match was on a hard court then I would pick Aslan Karatsev to win comfortably, but the fact that it is on clay gives Musetti some hope here. The young Italian has shown his tremendous fighting spirit and is seemingly always up for the challenge. I am backing the young Italian star to cause yet another upset in his short career. He shows incredible maturity despite his young age and I think that he has enough to win a very tight contest here. Three sets is very likely but I expect Lorenzo Musetti to get the win here and advance at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
