TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Diego Schwartzman (11) meets Dan Evans (18) in the Third Round on Monday October 11th, 2021.
There are so many exciting matches to choose from in the Third Round here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open, and this is no exception. Diego Schwartzman and Dan Evans are both within the top 25 players in the world and are capable of some very good tennis. Neither player has been at full strength lately and they will each be eager to go on a deep run here to end their season strongly. Will it be the small but dynamic Argentine Schwartzman? Or can the British #1 get the win here and advance to the Round of 16?
Diego Schwartzman is one of the most popular players on the ATP Tour, and is the eleventh seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The diminutive Argentine is better known for his clay court prowess, but he has had some strong results on the hard courts and will ready to go here. After receiving a bye in the First Round he surprisingly struggled against Maxime Cressy, daving two match points to get the comeback win. His next opponent Dan Evans is likely to provide a very stern test, and he knows that he will have to be much improved for him to have any chance here. Schwartzman doesn’t have the game to overpower his British opponent so he will rely on his speed and consistency to grind out a tough win.
Dan Evans is ranked #22 on the ATP Tour and is the 18th seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The British star enjoyed a strong start to the season, winning his first ever ATP title at the Murray River Open, but has since been quite inconsistent. His game is very unique, and he uses a slice backhand very effectively to unsettle his opponents, and is very difficult to handle on this surface. He started strongly here, defeating the dangerous Kei Nishikori in the Second Round and despite being the lower ranked player, he will be backing himself to get the win here over Diego Schwartzman who while talented, does not have the firepower to overpower the Brit.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with the Argentine leading the head to head 1-0. He won their only career meeting earlier this year in Cincinnati, winning a three set thriller. I am expecting yet another close match, with neither man in the greatest form, but they are too experienced to not pull it together soon. This match will go the distance, but I am backing Dan Evans to get the win here. His game is just better suited to this surface than his opponent’s, and I don’t think that Diego Schwartzman has displayed the type of tennis lately for us to have any confidence in him here. It will be a see-saw battle with lots of long rallies and lead changes, but Dan Evans will get the win here, advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
