TennisSection previews the 2023 Munich Open first-round match featuring Roberto Carballes Baena vs Marcos Giron on Monday, April 17, 2023.
Carballes Baena vs Giron Match Preview and Prediction
After winning his second career title in Marrakech, Roberto Carballes Baena will be first up in the Munich Open main draw where he will face USA’s Marcos Giron. Who will prevail?
Roberto Carballes Baena’s second ATP title was five years in the making, but it all culminated in grueling fashion. The Spaniard, now 30, won four of his five matches in Marrakech in three sets, the only time he received some respite was the retirement win over Dimitar Kuzmanov. Carballes Baena fully earned his week-long rest since and will appear in the Munich Open main draw for the first time when he takes on Marcos Giron.
Marcos Giron hasn’t won an ATP title in his career. In fact, the last title win at any level came at the Houston Challenger back in 2019. But he’s been a solid Tour-level top 100 player for a while now, winning over 200 matches on hard courts in his professional career. His record on clay does not stack well in terms of numbers, but he notched two big wins at last year’s clay-court swing, beating Alexander Bublik and Diego Schwartzman in Rome.
Carballes Baena vs Giron Prediction and Pick
Marcos Giron leads Roberto Carballes Baena 2-1 in their head-to-head. But it is pertinent to note that none of those matches were contested on clay, a surface Carballes Baena is so tough to beat and has always played his best tennis. And fresh from his title win in Marrakech, we are backing the Spaniard to notch his eighth win on the clay at the Munich Open.
