Australian Open 2022: Jannik Sinner vs. Alex de Minaur Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Jannik Sinner takes on Alex de Minaur in the Round of 16 on Monday, January 24th, 2021.

Will Jannik Sinner get the win? Will Alex de Minaur pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the top young talent taking on the home favorite. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open?

Jannik Sinner got a solid win over Taro Daniel, needing 4 sets to take down the man who defeated Andy Murray. Daniel was playing some great tennis, so it shouldn’t be too much of a concern that he dropped a set as he aims to do something similar to Australia’s crowd favorite Alex de Minaur. I expect Sinner to once again grab a 4 set win, seeing as de Minaur will be really fresh and pumped up, but he really hasn’t faced too strong of opposition, let’s see if the 20 year old Italian can take down the Aussie and book himself a place in the last eight here at the 2022 Australian Open.

Alex de Minaur has had some pretty easy matches going into this fourth round meeting with Jannik Sinner. He will have a very hard time coming up against the Italian star, Sinner has a massive game, and he’ll be able to hit through de Minaur nicely, as de Minaur just doesn’t play aggressively enough to play someone like Sinner. If de Minaur played super aggressively and it worked, I wouldn’t be surprised if he could be competitive with a lot more of the top players on the ATP Tour. Sinner will most likely knock him out with only a little turbulence though as he aims to move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open.

Jannik Sinner and Alex de Minaur have met twice before, with Jannik Sinner leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings came at the 2019 next gen ATP finals and at the 2020 Sofia Open, with Sinner winning the first one easily and the second one with some challenges. De Minaur hasn’t been playing great tennis for a while, so it’s also possible that he’ll be able to do nothing about the rampage of Sinner. Sinner has been playing great on the other hand, so I definitely expect him to move through here to a much tougher match to fight for a spot in the last 4 at the 2022 Australian Open.
