TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Karen Khachanov (25) meets Sebastian Korda in the Round of 16 on Monday July 5th, 2021.
Can the young American Sebastian Korda continue his dream Wimbledon debut by reaching the Quarter-Finals? He has played some fantastic tennis so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is playing freely without pressure. Next up in his path is the seasoned veteran Karen Khachanov, the 25th seed. This match really can go either way, who will get the win here and advance to the Quarters?
Karen Khachanov is the 25th seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is a former top 10 player on the ATP Tour. He has seen a radical drop in form over the past few seasons, and if not for protected rankings he surely would be even lower. While he has struggled, he has started well here, defeating Mackenzie McDonald in four sets in the opener before cruising pasr Egor Gerasimov in the Second Round. He then had a surprisingly easy win over the in-form Frances Tiafoe in the Third Round, where he played with controlled aggression, never allowing the American to get into the match. While he has a higher ranking than his opponent Sebastian Korda, he will be aware of Korda’s dangerous game and should not underestimate him.
Sebastian Korda is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is ranked #50 on the ATP Tour. His game seems perfectly suited for this surface and conditions, but grass takes some getting used to. You would be forgiven for thinking that he was a seasoned veteran on these courts, as he has looked comfortable so far here at Wimbledon. After upsetting Eastbourne champion Alex De Minaur in the First Round, he had a comfortable win over Antoine Hoang before defeating British #1 Dan Evans. That was no easy feat given the fact that the match was played on Center Court, with the entire crowd backing Evans. While he is the underdog here against Karen Khachanov, the Russian is not fully comfortable on these courts and Korda has serious potential to cause the upset here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and their head to head record stands at 0-0. The two players are both very evenly matched, and have both played some outstanding tennis so far. This match will potentially go the distance, and it is very hard to choose between the two. However, I am going with Sebastian Korda to get the win. The young American plays with wisdom beyond his years, and has a very well rounded game. Karen Khachanov plays with raw power and aggression, and on a good day he is able to overpower most, but I do think that Korda has what it takes to get the job done. It won’t be easy, but Korda will win, advancing to his first Grand Slam Quarter-Final here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
