Swiatek vs Svitolina Prediction
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek was on the ropes in her fourth-round match against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, narrowly escaping with the win, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in a three-hour slugfest. Swiatek saved two match points on her serve in the second set at 5-6, 15-40 down, and went on to win the tiebreak 7-2. Bencic’s resistance snapped midway through the third set ensuring Swiatek’s unbeaten streak extended to a 14th match.
The Pole has now made the quarterfinals at all four majors, becoming the youngest player to do so since Svetlana Kuznetsova. While Swiatek was doing battle with Bencic on Centre Court, her soon-to-be quarterfinal opponent Elina Svitolina was involved in a thrilling contest against Victoria Azarenka on Court 1.
It was the Ukrainian who had the last laugh, edging out the Belarusian 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 – her first career win over Azarenka (was 0-5 in the head-to-head). More importantly, Svitolina has now reached back-to-back quarterfinals at slams since her return to competition from maternity leave in early April. Svitolina has played incredibly well, for someone who is more comfortable playing counterpunching, she’s gone for broke at Wimbledon, taking calculated risks and she showed her stubbornness in defense.
The fact that she had more winners than Azarenka (37 to 30), more aces (8 to 4) and a greater number of points won behind her first serve, showed the Ukrainian’s mentality and approach to this match. But executing a perfect game plan against Swiatek is proving more and more insurmountable with every round. It’s only natural that Iga’s confidence will go up a notch and maybe she’ll have the belief that she might actually go all the way. Svitolina’s run has been stellar, but Swiatek will be just a step too far.
