Christopher O’Connell ranked 73rd in the world, will take on Serbian teenager Hamad Medjedovic in a first-round match at Wimbledon. Medjedovic made his Wimbledon qualifying debut in Roehampton this past week and produced supreme serving, especially against former top 50 player Ricardas Bernakis in the second round. After surviving that test in three sets, the 19-year-old edged home hope Billy Harris in the decisive match. He will face O’Connell, the one-handed Australian, whose sole main draw appearance at the All England Club resulted in a five-set defeat to Gael Monfils in 2021.

O’Connell enters this year’s tournament with a top 100 ranking and made a quarterfinal in one of the tuneup events. Medjedovic has never played on grass prior to this week, but he’s got a very big serve and moved very well on this surface. But he took a couple of medical timeouts on a shoulder issue and also had blisters after an energy-sapping qualifying match. The Serb also confirmed he had surgery on his foot less than a month ago, but says it’s not bothering him at the moment. Still, it would be quite a test for the teenager in a potentially intense match against a top 100 player.
