Marton Fucsovics lost to Andrey Rublev at the Rotterdam Open this past week as the Russian remains a thorn in his game. Fucsovics will look to bounce back at this week’s Qatar Open when he takes on the big-serving Lloyd Harris of South Africa.
After a run to the quarterfinals of the Rotterdam Open, Marton Fucsovics met his real kryptonite, Andrey Rublev. The pair had squared off many times this past year that they have actually fostered a friendship off the court. But Rublev showed no empathy towards the Hungarian as he inflicted a fourth defeat of 2022. Fucsovics endured a subpar showing in Australia where he won a grand total of one match in three tournaments. However, he will have some shades of confidence coming to the Qatar Open. The 30-year-old has made back-to-back quarterfinals in his last two visits and famously pushed Novak Djokovic to three sets in 2019 in the Round of 16. Can he return to winning ways when he takes on Lloyd Harris?
Lloyd Harris hasn’t fared any better. The big-serving South African is chasing for that elusive first win of 2022. He enters the Qatar Open with a 0-3 record for the year. Harris’ form has been largely affected by his positive coronavirus test just after Christmas last year. He had to isolate on his arrival to Australia, missing out from the first warm up tournament in Melbourne.
Lloyd Harris leads Marton Fucsovics 2-1 in their head-to-head. Fucsovics’ win over the South African came in this very fixture at the Qatar Open last season when he triumphed in three sets. Harris did get his revenge in Antwerp towards the end of the year to nudge ahead in the series. However, the Hungarian will enter Tuesday’s contest as the slight favorite. Confidence seems to be an issue for Harris after an indifferent start to the season in which he has failed to win a single match. Fucsovics looks poised to win his opening match in Doha yet again.
